Roundtable: How Do Books Cross Borders?
ASEEES convention, Washington DC
22 Nov 2025, 10am
This round table brings together practitioners (editors/publishers) and scholars to discuss what it means to bring texts and books across borders—geographical, political, cultural, and more. What factors—linguistic, institutional, financial, and other—are important in these crossings? What is gained and what is lost in transition? How do transplanted texts help to remember (or forget)? How to make such transfer successful? What are the effects of digital media? What has changed within our living memory? What is the situation today? [Information from the organizers.]

Book talk: Orwell on Both Sides of the Iron Curtain. The Story of Poland
City University of New York, Hunter College
9 Oct 2025
Celebrating U.S. Banned Books Week and the recent publication of George Orwell and Communist Poland (2025), the talk explored the complex Polish reception of Orwell, the theme of Banned Books Week 2025. In doing so, the talk also reflected on the value of the book and on how access to censored literature and ideas in Soviet-occupied Poland empowered both individuals and collectivities.

The talk examined the translation and dissemination efforts in the West, as well as the creative smuggling methods – such as miniature editions, balloons, false covers, and diplomatic bags – that were used to bring Orwell’s works and ideas into Poland. The lecture discussed why activists risked their lives for Orwell engaging in underground printing, distribution, and reading. It also looked at the surprising ways Orwell’s work and name managed to appear in official, state-sanctioned culture despite the long-standing ban. It concluded by reflecting on the value of access to books and how the ban itself contributed to Orwell’s myth and sanctioning him as a symbol of resistance that inspires generations of rebels.
