Handbook of Empirical Literary Studies

This 2021 handbook reviews efforts to increase the use of empirical methods in studies of the aesthetic and social effects of literary reading. Prepared by members of the IGEL Society.

IGEL research coalitions

IGEL society research clusters that work on specific areas in empirical studies of literature and the media, e.g. absorption, self-transcendent effects of media or openness, reflection and self-altering reading.

ELIT – the Empirical Study of Literature Training Network

A Horizon 2020 European Training Network (ETN) has trained a new generation of interdisciplinary PhD researchers in the field of the empirical study of literature.

IGEL – the International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature

The Society supports efforts to apply scientific methods to study the structure and functions of literature as well as the reception of literature. It has 21 research coalitions and sponsors conferences and a scientific journal the Scientific Study of Literature (SSOL).

SSSR – Society for the Scientific Study of Reading

The Society promotes the scientific study of reading and disseminates information about reading and related areas such as language and literacy. It sponsors conferences and a scientific journal Scientific Studies of Reading.
